Preparing Your Child for Their First Swim Lesson: Tips for Parents

Getting ready for your child’s first swim lesson can be exciting but also a bit nerve-wracking.

But don’t worry – we’re here to help! Here are some simple tips to ensure your child’s first swim lesson is a positive experience.

Talk It Up and Visit the Pool

Start talking about the swim lessons a few days before they begin. Let your child know what to expect. Explain that they’ll be learning to swim in a pool with a teacher and other kids.

Do your best to make it sound fun and exciting! This will help to reduce any anxiety they might have.

If possible, take your child to visit the pool where they will have their lessons. Let them see the water, watch a class, and get used to the environment. This can make the first day less intimidating. Seeing other kids having fun can also help them feel more comfortable.

Gear Up for Success

Make sure your child has the right swim gear. A well-fitting swimsuit, swim cap, and goggles can make a big difference.

Let your child pick out their gear if possible – this can make them feel more excited about their lessons. Comfortable gear helps them focus on learning rather than adjusting their outfit.

On the day, pack a swim bag with all the essentials. Include a towel, extra clothes, swim gear, a water bottle, and a snack.

Having everything ready can make the day go more smoothly. Knowing they have their favourite snack waiting can also give them something to look forward to after the lesson.

Build Confidence at Home

Before the first lesson, practise some basic water skills at home. If you have a bathtub, let your child splash around and get used to the water. Teach them how to blow bubbles in the water and hold their breath.

These small steps can build their confidence and make them feel ready for the lesson.

Keep a positive attitude about the swim lessons. Your enthusiasm can be contagious. Encourage your child and praise their efforts, no matter how small. Let them know it’s okay to be nervous and that they’ll get better with practice. Positive reinforcement can help them feel more confident.

Plan for a Smooth Start

Arrive at the pool a little early on the first day. This gives your child time to get used to the surroundings without feeling rushed.

They will also then have time to meet their instructor and see the other kids arriving. A calm start can set a positive tone for the lesson.

Stay nearby during the lesson, but give your child space to interact with the instructor and other kids. Let them know you’re there, but avoid hovering.

This balance helps them feel secure while also encouraging independence.
